Australia’s ambassador to China is seeking permission to travel to Tibet to understand what is causing Tibetans to set themselves on fire, Foreign Minister Bob Carr told the Australian Senate on Monday. Mr Carr said Ambassador Frances Adamson wished “to see for herself the grievances which have given rise to the self-immolations.” The ambassador will also request separate permission for an Australian parliamentary group to visit the region. Nearly 30 Tibetans have self-immolated since the start of 2011 to protest cultural and spiritual repression. Most of the incidents have been in China’s Sichuan province. Details are hard to obtain since foreign media are not allowed into the area. Australian media reported that Chinese authorities have not yet responded to a previous request for Australia to visit the Tibetan areas of China’s neighboring provinces.
